“Do you think I am disdainful of the feelings of others?”
His abrupt change of topic further marred Georgiana’s lovely countenance as she tried to make sense of her brother’s contemplative visage.
“I do not understand what you are asking.”
Darcy looked briefly at her before returning his gaze ahead. “Perhaps it is not fair to ask you to judge your brother in this manner. Forgive me.”
Eager to be of service to her brother, Georgiana protested. “Oh no, please. I should like to help.”
With a sigh, Darcy nodded. “I was made aware recently of some…defects in my character, and I am endeavoring to mend them.”
“Defects? Upon my word!” Georgiana’s quick defense brought a wistful smile to his lips, and he raised her gloved hand to his lips to kiss her fingers.
“It warms my heart to hear you defend me so valiantly, Georgie. I have not always been the best of brothers to you—”
“If you do not wish to hear my protests, Brother, speak no more absurdities!”
Nodding, Darcy tucked away the warmth he felt from her defense into his heart and sobered as he continued. “I have been made aware that I can be selfish, conceited, and disdainful of others.”
“While I cannot agree with the foolish person who labeled you as such, I will attempt to address the claims as objectively as I can.”
Her name is Elizabeth, and she is no fool. Darcy smiled at his sister, bemused by the fire in her eyes. And I think you would have adored her.
Squaring her slim shoulders, Georgiana addressed the first of the unfounded accusations. “Selfish. You are the most unselfish person I know, Brother. You are always free with your time whenever you can allow it to spend it with me. You give your money freely to many charities…”
“Georgie, I have realized my tendency to put my own wants above those of others. Is that not the definition of selfishness?”
His sister was quiet for a moment. “But you are a Darcy. Our parents would expect you to put your own family circle above others. While I am certain that the rest of the world has merit, they are not Darcys.”
Astonished by her blunt response, Darcy laughed. And he could not admonish her pride. Georgiana was good and wholesome, and yet she, in so few words, had described his own actions in public as to make them reasonable. Like his parents, Darcy had given Georgiana good principles but allowed them to be followed in pride and conceit. Had she said that to anyone else, she would have rightly been labeled the same as he was by Elizabeth.
It was testament to Darcy how far he had to come that he could see the reasonableness in her statement while still detecting the conceit. Her innocent and shameless riposte proved that she believed it as fact.
“I cannot say that you are not a little conceited,” Georgiana began again, drawing her brother’s direct attention. “But a little conceit is not a very bad thing, I begin to believe. Only think, you come from a family of long standing.
